Saved by the Salsa
This is from a colleague of mine who also teaches Zumba Gold. I love this story she shares:
"Had an amazing example of theory into practice today in one of my Zumba Gold classes. I tell them all the time that salsa is a great way to practice balance because you go off balance and then back to center. I tell them that a great salsa at the right time can save a fall. This morning one of my students who not only has Parkinsons, but also a prosthetic leg, was practicing cumbia with her prosthetic leg, she began to lose balance. It all happens so fast, it seemed a fall was inevitable. My heart went to my throat, everyone in the class was gasping, when she suddenly did a side salsa, pushed on her own hip to return to center and... NO fall!!!! We just all stood there amazed... and then I said, 'See, I told you it would work!' "
Remember how I tell you to put your weight on your foot when you step out for a side salsa? There are benefits to shifting your weight. It's so important for quality of life!
Hooray for the Salsa!

This is Zumba Gold!
I love this short video that shows how FUN Zumba® Gold is!
And did you spot that great looking instructor? That's Fabio Barros. I got to attend a class last year that he taught. He's amazing! Here is our picture together. Wish my hair looked like his.

Bring a friend contest
This next session is special!
1) It starts on my BIRTHDAY. Mmm-hmm. I'm starting it off with YOU!
2) This session will include a class co-taught by my mother. She teaches Zumba Gold, too! She'll be in town on August 3, and it's always a treat to have her visit my classes.
3) Special Price! Knowing that some of you take vacations, too, I tried to find the happy medium for how to keep the classes going for you and for me. Drop in fee is still just $5, so you can choose that option if you like, but the entire two months (SEVEN classes) is just $20. That is the lowest price I've EVER offered for these classes. We won't have class July 27, or August 10. You can pay via Paypal by clicking here, or just bring your payment to class next week.
4) I'm going to the Zumba Convention in Orlando! So crazy! And I feel a little guilty for the expense, but I'm picking up TWO new trainings that I intend to be specifically useful for Zumba Gold. One is Zumba Toning®, which uses light weights to help strengthen your arms. The other is Zumba Sentao®, which utilizes a chair as a tool to further enhance muscle tone. I'll learn more when I'm there, but I'm hoping to just spice up our classes a bit with those additional trainings. I'm so excited for the potential!
5) PRIZE GIVEAWAY--
Okay, we all know Sherry totally wins the prize for the most friends brought to class. But let's clean the slate and start a new "friend"ly competition. Whoever brings the most friends during July-August will get a cute little Zumba jacket (or a t-shirt if you prefer). Or maybe I'll pick out something special for you while I'm at the Zumba Convention in Orlando. Who knows? But it will be good. Are you game?
So what do I want for my birthday? More people like you to enjoy our classes! Bring some friends. I will have free buddy passes available for anyone who purchases the July-August session. You can of course redeem them right away if you bring a friend next week. And you'll get a free Zumba bracelet, too!

No class on June 15
Shelly is running the Ragnar Relay from Logan to Park City on June 15-16, so we won't have class on June 15. See you on June 22! That is if she can still walk!

More reasons why light exercise brings big benefits
This article from Parade magazine had some encouraging information about moderate exercise:
http://www.parade.com/health/stay-healthy/2012/04/29-secrets-to-a-better-smarter-workout.html
In a nut shell:
• Moderate exercise for 30 minutes, 5 times a week reduces your risk of pre-mature death by 20 percent.
• Music makes you work harder, without realizing it. This is why dancing makes our "exercise" so enjoyable AND effective.
• Exercise makes your body younger. Yes, biologically, your body reverses aging.
• Exercise strengthens your brain power.
• Exercise makes you happier.
Aside from this article, my eye doctor told me that recent research shows regular exercise reduces your risk of macular degeneration of the eye by 50%!
What are you waiting for! Sign up for our next Zumba Gold session and JOIN THE PARTY!

Bring your families to have fun TOGETHER in Zumba!
I will be demonstrating easy, family-friendly Zumba tomorrow morning (Saturday) at the Provo Macey's in their little theatre. Let them see what you do!
In the summer, you could consider bringing your children or grandchildren to class with you because it is easy enough for anyone to follow and you could have a great time together! Last summer we had three generations enjoying Zumba and everyone was all smiles!

You will spend money on your health--at the doctor or in prevention?
This is a scientist. Some of the other scientists he quotes are people my husband knows and works with. This is good information explained in a way we can understand. He does speak fast so I recommend watching it a couple of times. I have a summary below the video of the key points I like.
There are lots of things we should do to maintain our health: eat well, sleep enough, exercise, lower blood pressure, maintain healthy weight. Which of those has the BIGGEST impact on your health? The research shows that 30 minutes of exercise a day (even just walking) is the most powerful thing you can do to improve your health (blood pressure, heart health, depression, reduce dementia, reduce diabetes, reduce joint stiffness, strengthen bones--just to name a few).
And I was really amazed at the two groups who were candidates for heart stints. One group got the stints, another group exercised 30 minutes a day and did a 60 minute aerobics class just once a week (just like us!). The group that did the exercise faired better over the next year than those who had the surgery to open the heart valve. Wow!
So many of us equate exercise with weight loss. But there is SO much more to what exercise can do for you. So what I really liked in this video was that he shows that even if you don't lose weight, the regular exercise still staves off many of the negative effects of excess weight.
Hallelujah! Doesn't that take off some of the pressure?
Look. You're gonna spend money on your health one way or another. You can pay for the doctor visits and the medication and surgeries, and spend WAY more than 30 minutes in the waiting rooms, or you can ENJOY 30 minutes a day walking and come to Zumba once a week with us. INVEST in your quality of life. The pay off is BIG!
